The city of Genoa is having to cope with an invasion of some two hundred wild boars that trot into the outskirts in the evenings looking for food. Some have become so tame that they present themselves regularly outside bakers and restaurants waiting for titbits. They can, however, become aggressive and dangerous. In addition, they can cause serious damage to cars and they overturn rubbish bins, scattering the contents all over the squares and roadsides.

An estimated 15 thousand of the animals live in the Ligury region and the population is flourishing. Twenty-four wild boar were shot during the first citizen safari organized by the Provincial Security Committee in an attempt to deal with the situation. The move, however, drew an avalanche of protests from animal lovers and the Committee is now studying a plan to transfer a large number of the tuskers to Calabria, where the wild boar population is rapidly dwindling.
