The Tuscany region has a newly opened Archaeological Park extending over some 40 sq km at Carmignano, near Prato. The area unites the Archaeological Museum of Artimino with four monumental Etruscan sites within the Carmignano territory.
The 600 sqm Museum is situated in an ancient building within the medieval town walls and opposite La Ferdinanda villa that belonged to the Medici family. Inside, the collection of rare Etruscan objects found during four decades of archaeological excavations is divided into two main sections entitled the world of the living and the world of the dead. Among the most interesting treasures on show are three censers one with an inscription in the Etruscan alphabet - and a series of finely worked ivory fragments, thought to have belonged to a throne.
In addition to the Museum, the Archaeological Park of Carmignano includes four major Etruscan sites: the Necropolis of Artimino at Prato Rosello, the Tumulus of Montefortini, the Tomb of the Boschetti at Comeana and the fortified settlement of Pietramarina. In addition, visitors can explore the ancient Etruscan settlement of Artimino, the Paggeria Medicea sacred zone and the old town walls.
