ROMAN SHIPS FOUND

Two ancient Roman ships, submerged in the sea off the Aegean coast of Turkey, were recently discovered by a team of Italian archaeologists, led by Eugenia Equini Schneider. The find is of particular importance because the ships cargoes of marble and amphorae are intact.

One ship dates from the Roman imperial period and the other from the 6 century AD. They were lying on the seabed near the ancient port of Elaiussa Sebaste, which was founded in the 2 century BC. The present site is now known as Mersin.
