The Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbits Beach) on the Island of Lampedusa has been voted the worlds most beautiful beach by the travellers website Tripadvisor. The Travelers Choice Beaches Awards 2013 elected the Lampedusa beach from among 276 beaches examined worldwide.
The Spiaggia dei Conigli is a nature reserve, run by the Italian conservation agency Legambiente. It is a protected area, where the sea turtle of the Caretta Caretta species comes every spring to lay its eggs.
Other Italian beaches nominated included the Pelosa beach of Stintino (classified eighth in Europe), plus resorts in Sardinia, Ligury, Sicily, Calabria and Campania
