The city of Salerno (Campania) will once more draw an expected 500.000 visitors during the festive season to admire its mouth-dropping display of Luci d'Artista (decorative street lighting designed by Italian and foreign artists. Inaugurated on the 6th December, the luminous display transforms the streets of the historic centre into a magical fairyland until the 31st January 2014.
The initiative is thanks to a ten-year collaboration with Turin to create a tourist attraction in the heart of the winter season and has proved so successful that cruise ships in the Mediterranean now include it in their offshore programme.
This year's theme is Snow of Spring, with gigantic reproductions of glittering silver trees with pink blossom illuminating Piazza Sedile del Campo, while Botticelli's Primavera transforms Piazza Flavio Gioia. The Villa Comunale, instead, features an Enchanted Gardenť, with the stalls of the annual Christmas market along the elegant esplanade. Piazza Sant'Agostino has a large magic Chinese dragon and dozens of suspended Chinese lanterns, with the surrounding maze of narrow streets overhung with sparkling garlands of flowers, branches and even an Aladin flying carpet.
