ho said philosophy was only for geeks? The booming annual Philosophy Festival in the three towns of Modena, Carpi and Sassuolo (Reggio Emilio) shows that the subject attracts more and more people every year. 34,000 people attended the first year (2001) the event was held, while last year's version attracted 218,000 participants. This year's edition, running from the 12th-14th September 2014, is expected to draw the crowds, fascinated by the high quality of the speakers and the subject matter. This year's theme is The Age of Uncertain Glory and the programme lists 200 free discussions, lectures, concerts, readings, spectacles, events aimed at children and philosophical dinners.
Market research has shown that the event is not confined to university students but that it attracts members of the general public, many of whom have never studied philosophy. This is attributed to the dynamic presentations of the speakers and the universal appeal of the themes chosen.
Past editions have centred round Happiness (2001), Beauty (2002), Life (2003), World (2004), Senses (2005), Humanity (2006), Knowledge (2007), Imagination (2008), Community (2009), Luck (2010), Nature (2011), Things (2012) and Love (2013).
