The town of Ariccia, in the Castelli hills near Rome, has produced some of this season's most unusual Christmas trees. The three trees, erected in the main piazza, are entirely composed of recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, old tyres, tin cans and even an old propeller that serves as a cross on the top and whirls around in the wind, catching the rays of the sun.
Next to the trees stands the Christmas crib, surrounded by panels elaborated by the local school children, featuring traditional figures from the Neapolitan Nativity scenes, like the Sleeping Shepherd Boy, the Washerwoman and the Water Carrier, as well as tributes to contemporary heroes like Iqbal Masih, the young Pakistani boy assasinated in 1995 because he organized a rebellion against child worker exploitation.
