CASTELGANDOLFO: POPE OPENS DOORS

COMUNE DI CASTELGANDOLFO | Tesori d'Italia Magazine - TesoriMagazine

For over three hundred years, the palace overlooking Lake Albano in the little hillside town of Castelgandolfo has been the summer refuge of the Popes. Pope Francis, however, shows little inclination to take an August break and the 55 hectare estate has lain virtually empty since he ascended the throne of Peter.

Last year, the splendid gardens, which also contain important archaeological remains, were opened to the public on a regular basis. Now the Pope has expressed the desire to extend the use of the palace itself, as well as the farm inside the grounds. The intention is to transform a part of the palace into a museum and art gallery that can be visited by tourists.

The farm, which covers an area of 25 hectares, is a working concern, with hens that lay 200 eggs every day, 25 cows giving milk and rabbits, capons and a couple of ostriches. It also produces honey, yoghurt and cheese which can be purchased in shops in Castelgandolfo. Pope Francis has expressed the wish to open the farm for visitors in the near future.
