After 167 years, the historic town of Montefalco, near Perugia (Umbria), has finally been able to welcome the return of one of its most precious works of art – the celebrated altarpiece known as La Madonna della Cintola (Madonna of the Girdle) by Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli. The painting, freshly restored by the Vatican Museums, has been on exhibit in the San Francesco Museum in Montefalco since July 2015 and has attracted so many visitors that the exposition has now been prolonged until the 30th April 2016.
The altarpiece was painted aropund 1450 and was gifted to Pope Pius IX by the Montefalco community in 1848. Since then, it has been part of the Vatican Pinacoteca collection.
Called a miracle in blue and gold, the renaissance masterpiece can be appreciated in its rightful context, alongside the frescoes painted for the Church of San Francesco, again by Benozzo.
