From the 22 March 2019, the Serapium, the luxury private apartments of the Emperor Hadrian at his Villa in Tivoli, will be open to the public for the first time, after a lengthy restoration project. Closed for years for security reasons, the complex consists of a monumental pavilion and nympheum leading onto the imperial dining hall on the scenic Canopus pool where Hadrian entertained his most important guests.
The Serapium (called after the Egyptian god Serapis) was an achievement of architectural engineering, cooled by waterfalls and rivulets, where miniature boats containing exotic dishes floated past the diners reclining in the triclinium.
Entrance confined to groups of 20. Prior booking required.
