German artist Ha Schult has brought his army of trash sculptures to Matera (Basilicata), as part of the programme of events for the 2019 European Capital of Culture. Schult has created over a thousand human-type figures out of 35 tons of waste products, like tin cans, plastic detergent containers, broken car parts and old computers and similar throw-away materials. The statues are a visual protest against the present situation of pollution in the world environment. The garbage people are scattered around the scenic, cavern-riddled depressions where people once lived in primitive conditions, but which are now converted into unique grotto hotels, restaurants, pubs and lively night spots. They will remain there until the 27th October 2019 before they take their message further on an international tour.
