ITALY'S CENTENARIANS INCREASE
The number of people in Italy who are more than a century old increased by 138.7% in the last 10 years (2001/2011) the Italian statistics agency ISTAT said Wednesday, citing the results of Italy's October 2011 census.
There were 6,313 people over 100 years old in 2001, whereas in 2011 the number reached 15,080, and two had reached an age of 112.
The number of people who are over the age of 65 rose from 18.7% of the population to 20.8%, whereas those over 85 rose from 2.2% to 2.8%.
