Anticipation is running high for the first ecumenical Vatican V Church of England cricket challenge on the 18th September 2014, scheduled to take place at Kent's country cricket ground in Canterbury, The honour of the Vatican will be upheld by a keen team of players, selected from among priests and international seminarians, many from the Indian subcontinent, known for their prowess at the sport. The St. Peter's Cricket Club team is headed by Father Tony Currer, former Catholic chaplain of Durham University.
The Church of England team includes eight trainee priests and is headed by the Reverend Jez Barnes, vicar of St. Stephens, Twickenham and the Right Reverend Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury, a former 1st class team player for Oxford.
The proceeds from a collection taken at the gate will be donated to the Global Freedom Network, a joint Roman Catholic-Anglican organization dedicated to eliminating the trafficking of human beings.
