Italy's leading gastronomic guide, Il Gambero Rosso 2015, has published its selection of this year's best Italian extra virgin olive oils. Presented at the Sol & Agrifood Fair dedicated to olive oil production, which runs concurrent with the Vinitaly Wine Fair of Verona, the guide lists 311 oil producers and 471 oils described and rated.
According to the book, the top region for olive oil excellence is Sicily, with ten olive oil farms awarded, followed by Lazio and Tuscany (nine farms each) and third Puglia (8 farms). The Consortium of Olive Oil producers, UNAPROL, commented that the past year had been a particularly difficult one for producers due to a scarse harvest, and that the Gambero Rosso nominations were therefore particularly gratifying.
