The ancient custom of moving the flocks from the winter plains to the summer mountain pastures known as the transhumance - has been revived by the Tuscany Region. A herd of over 100 sheep and cattle are being driven by 35 butteri (cowboys) from Montalto di Castro (Lazio) to Arezzo between the 11th - 18th September 2015 in four stages.
Trekkers are welcome to come along and join in what promises to be a fun event, with the participation of Manolo and Camille, equestrian artistes from the Theatre du Centaure of Marseilles (France) and the Animaglyphes, creators of land art , illustrating the bonds uniting people and animals.
The journey started off at the archaeological park of Vulci near Montalto di Castro and ended in the Grosseto area on the first leg, Monday 14th. From Grosseto, the procession will move on to San Galgano, Chiusdino (16th), then on to Siena and the Medici Fortress arriving on the 17th . Arezzo, the final destination, will be reached on the 20th September. The party camps along route at the four stops, where the nearby villages prepare the typical food of the shepherds, washed down with a flask of good Ruffino Chianti wine the traditional drink of the butteri. The mornings and evenings are livened up with all kinds of street entertainment and local craftsmen showing their skills,
