The medieval Castle of Santa Severa, situated on the seafront a few miles north of Rome, has now been transformed into a hostel-museum ready to welcome guests. The fourteen rooms can accommodate couples and family groups at typical youth hostel prices.
Part of the Castle is given over to the Innovation Lab, with three museum rooms equipped with special effects and interactive video systems.
The Castle, after years of neglect, was finally opened as a museum a year ago and has attracted thousands of visitors. Work is on-going to transform it into a major tourist and cultural attraction, with facilities for events, conferences, weddings and shows.
The re-launch of the Castle as a tourist destination is part of a master plan to recover many of Italy's forgotten or unused monuments. Towering on a rocky base in front of the beach, the Santa Severa Castle has been described as the most beautiful youth hostel in Europe by enthusiastic visitors. Its position near important Etruscan archaeological sites and the marina of Santa Marinella, popular with yachters, plus its proximity to Rome, will ensure that it will be much in demand.
So far, the Santa Severa Youth Hostel does not have its own website but information is available on:
