Prof. Massimo Osanna, curator of the Pompeii archaeological site, has announced the discovery of a whole new area of the buried city, discovered during the recent excavation project. The zone explored, an area of 1,400 sq m near the domus known as the house of the Silver Wedding, has revealed streets with clear traces of balconied houses (a first for Pompeii where the fury of the eruption destroyed most of the upper structures of buildings) and beautifully preserved frescoes with colours still intact.
Archaeologists are particularly excited because the new digs involve the '700 century excavations carried out by the Bourbon kings of Naples, which were not scientifically documented. The explorations have also revealed layers of lava ash from subsequent Vesuvius eruptions, at the end of the 18 nth century and in 1815.
