National Geographic Italia has announced the winners of its 2018 Photographic Competition. First prize absolute has been awarded to Padua photographer Marino Bilato for his striking shot of a line up of lions in Tanzania.
Carlo Massalini of Rome came first in the category Places and Landscapes, with an evocative portrayal of rural China, while Mauro De Bettio of Longarone (Belluno) was first in the People category with a close up of a dancer in the traditional Romanian Bear Dance. The Junior category was won by 13 year old Matteo Gironi of Turin for his unusual shot of clasped hands.
The most surprising result, however, was in the Animal World section, where David Francescangeli from the Monti Martani area of Umbria, won over tough competition for his staunch little chaffinch bracing its fragile body against the force of a blizzard. The jury was captivated by the message the photo conveyed of the bird's defiant and courageous stance against overwhelming odds
