Matilde di Canossa, the medieval iron countess who is famous for helping the papacy in the power struggle with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV, is being celebrated in a series of exhibitions and events being staged in the province of Mantova up till the 11 th January 2009.

Exhibitions include: Matilde di Canossa, the Papacy, the Empire in the House of Mantegna, Mantova, Matilde and the Treasure of Canossa

 in various venues in Reggio Emilia, the Abbey of Matilde in the histopric Abbey of Polirone, San Benedetto Po, and tours of Matildes castle at Canossa itself.
