POPE'S STATUE CAUSES CONTROVERSY @ 24 May 2011

A colossal statue dedicated to the late Pope John Paul II, erected in front of Romes Termini railway station and unveiled on the 18 May 2011, has attracted a flood of criticism. The 5m-high bronze statue, by sculptor Oliviero Rainaldi,  represents the Pope throwing open his cloak in a welcoming and protective gesture to passengers arriving at the station.
The monument, entitled Conversations, was donated by the Silvana Paolini Angelucci humanitarian foundation to honour the Beatification of Pope John Paul II.Critics have complained that the face is not a good likeness. Typical comments have been that: It looks more like Pope John XXIII than Wojtyla. and that the cavernous mantle would end up as a refuge for hobos.
