The Rome edition of the Gambero Rosso Food Guide (the Italian equivalent of the Michelin Guide) celebrated its 30th anniversary in grand style, with a mega prize giving ceremony at the Rome Sheraton Hotel.
Over a hundred awards went to a selection of top restaurants, trattorie, wine bars, gourmet outlets and icecream-makers in Rome and Lazio region, followed by a candelit dinner in the Sheraton garden, where eight award-winning chefs each provided a dish of alta cucina (top culinary art).
The top Tre Forchette (three forks) nominations went to the Pergola, the celebrated restaurant of the Hotel Rome Cavalieri, with chef Hans Beck (a myth in Roman culinary circles), plus three out-of-town establishments – La Trota in the little town of Rivodutri (near Rieti), Le Colline Ciociare at Acuto (Frosinone) and Pascucci al Porticciolo at the port of Fiumicino. The Tre Gamberi (Three Shrimps) accolade was awarded to Sora Maria a Arcangelo at Olevano Romano, near Rome.
Special prizes were given for best wine cellar, best service, best traditional Roman cuisine, as well as five additional awards selected by the Gruppo del Gusto (Taste Group) of the Rome Foreign Press Association. To mark the 30th anniversary, over 40 restaurants, shops and wine bars that have maintained consistent high standards over the years received nominations.
The present edition of the Gambero Rosso Guide 2017 lists 1620 recommended establishments in and around Rome. Don't say patrons and consumers aren't spoiled for choice!
