The five-day Medieval Festival at Gubbio (Umbria) offers a new look at the period erroneously known as the "Dark Ages", which were, in fact, the foundation of European civilization. The Festival, into its fourth edition, has fast become a point of reference for all those interested in an era often misrepresented as an age of ignorance and superstition. This year's theme is "Barbarians, Discovering the Others", and takes the form of a journey of discovery among peoples and individuals, often only formally separated by borders and frontiers. The programme lists over 100 events, featuring encounters and debates with some 200 historians, writers, artists, architects, scientists and journalists, as well as a Medieval Book Fair that includes a section of lesser known works presented by independent publishers. The Illuminated Manuscripts and World Calligraphy event promises surprises. Dedicated to the modern art of hand printing, this links the Middle Ages with the present day, showing how Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, was inspired by the lessons of calligraphy of Trappist monk Roberto Palladino for the font he adopted for the Mac.The series of history lectures, held by experts in the Medieval field, will be held in the Centro Santo Spirito, a 14th century former monastery, and will cover a wide variety of themes regarding the peoples of Europe, the middle East and North Africa, a fascinating blend of cultures and movements that formed the world we know today.
